Scottish Primrose

Naturewatch

Diary
Spring 2010

Here at Cantick Head we know that Spring must be on its way when the wild daffodils and wild primroses begin to blossom by the sides of the roads and paths.  It also means that the rare Scottish Primrose will soon be flowering too.

The animals, too, provide a sure sign that winter has gone on holiday and that warmer weather can surely be expected

Lambing

Around Hoy the farmers are looking as though a good night’s sleep would be most welcome as they have been up most nights recently helping their ewe’s give birth to the 2010 crop of lambs.

The same holds true for the cattle farmers and doubly so for those who have both!

The rocks of the cliffs are covered by a layer of pasture sufficient for rabbits to burrow.  Naturally, therefore, we can watch quite a few rabbits with their young scampering about on the cliff-tops and pastures.

Equally, on the Mayday weekend we were able to watch a school of harbour porpoises parading past the lighthouse from
Scapa Flow towards the west.  Hopefully that means that their cousins, the dolphins and whales will not be long in paying a visit too.

From further north on the island we’ve had news that a small group of puffins have already been seen.  Obviously, they were determined to book their place beside the North Atlantic before the usual crowds arrive during the next month or so.

Also, confirmation from around Rackwick Bay that the family of otters are still there and appear to have bred an otter pup or two. (Sorry, but their exact location is a guarded secret!)
